Over 7000 UK businesses are being encouraged to meet the challenge of the Government's new Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and reap the benefits offered by removing sources of energy waste. ESOS will require large enterprises to undertake energy audits to review how energy is used on-site and in transport.

Energy systems provider Energys Group points out that the scheme offers opportunities to offset the cost of compliance. And energy reduction specialist NIFES, through its information hub at, says that ESOS should not be treated like just another carbon tax, but as an opportunity to make financial savings by taking swift, targeted action.

The Carbon Trust, meanwhile, believes ESOS could bring total energy savings two or three times higher than the Government's £300m estimate if businesses act quickly. For more details see our top news item below.
