Could a more focused approach to a full energy management strategy
bring about a significant improvement in an organisation's
energy performance? Such a course of action takes more than just
turning off the lights - it calls for additional data collection
and management, which in turn means much greater effort.
The goal, says Spencer Rigler, VP Energy Management at Elster
EnergyICT, "is to exploit the opportunity to measure and
collect data across an organisation, but optimise the cost, and
effort of managing costs, such as meter data collection, maintaining
the meter assets, and efficiently running the process of analysis".
Saving energy is like sticking to a New Year's resolution,
says Rigler: difficult but not impossible. While adopting a more
structured long-term EMS can potentially reduce a business's
energy costs by as much as 30 per cent, he says that the process
of energy saving can create an operational overhead which must
be managed and controlled.
